PPD Recommend: Nominee

Let us introduce you to a 4 piece emo pop punk band called Nominee from Texas USA who have just released their new EP ‘Drag Me Out’ which instantly has us hooked.

FFO: Knuckle Puck, Real Friends Boston Manor

We sat down with singer Chris for a chat about the new EP:

PPD: Hey, would you like to introduce yourself and state your role in the band?

Chris: Hey man, my name is Chris and I sing for Nominee.

PPD: So Chris, Nominee have released a new EP, would you like to tell us a bit about the release?
Christopher Mclelland

Chris: Yeah, we just released our second EP called Drag Me Out. It took a while to put the right songs together for this release and we probably ended up scrapping nearly 15 songs, but at the end of the day we knew we weren’t going to release anything we weren’t 100% happy with. We couldn’t be happier with that decision either, regardless of how long it took us to release it.

Chris: The record touches mainly on dealing with bipolar disorder and how it can effect the relationships around you if not treated properly. It was extremely personal to write about and thats probably the main reason for the delay in between releases, but I knew this was something I wanted to tackle.

PPD: How would you say your sound has progressed and any new influences since your first EP?

Chris: Thats honestly a great question and I was thinking about it the other day. Drag Me Out is a product of us all writing songs together after a couple member changes and a lot of personal distress. But we’ve all been exposed to so much great music over the course of the last two years. Some incredible records have come out that I still can’t get enough of by Julien Baker, Turnover, Can’t Swim etc. However, I don’t feel like that influence shows on this record, but that’s not to say it won’t maybe in the future.

PPD: You guys released a music video for White Water, can you tell us a little bit about the track and how the concept of the video was put together?

Chris: White Water is about realizing that you have to show more of a spine when you under appreciated or feel taken advantage of. I feel like now a days, around every turn there’s someone waiting to use you for their own gain in one way or another. Everyone has someone in their life that they’ll let back in after they they let you down time and time again. Originally we wrote a short film for the entire EP. The White Water video, is just one part of many in a story. Unfortunately though, doing 7 videos becomes wildly expensive. We’d still love to finish the story but for now, we’ll have to take it one video at a time.

PPD: Wow, that’s such a creative idea. Looking forward to seeing more of that!

PPD: Now that you have released the EP at the start of 2017, what are your plans for the rest of the year?

Chris: Yeah man, the story itself has so much to it and we’re so proud of the idea itself. We may end up producing and directing it ourselves just to make sure it gets done. I hope so.

Chris: We released Drag Me Out as soon as we could in 2017 with plans to hit the ground running for a majority of the year. We’ll be touring consistently in support of the record and playing the songs as much as humanly possible. I’m hoping we can get across the pond this year, but we’ll see!
PPD: We will be here with open arms! Is everything booked DIY style or have you got help from a label?

Chris: As of right now we are completely DIY, which we have kind of fallen in love with.
We love booking our own tours because it creates so many relationships and friendships.
We’d love to have an agent or label help, but for now we’re fine with doing it the way it has to be done and no mater what, we’ll always make sure to leave a show knowing we made some friends with promoters and show goers.

PPD: Excellent, we are big fans of the DIY scene. Final question,If you could choose, what band would you like to tour with and what festival would you like to be on?

Chris: Even though we’d stick out like a sore thumb, I think we’d all love to tour with The Chariot if they were still doing it. Best live band. If it had to be a band that was still touring, I’d want to tour with Jimmy Eat World or Saves the Day. They both still crush live. As far as a festival goes, we’d love to do Slam Dunk (I’ve always wanted the opportunity to see/be a part of it), Soundwave (AU) if it hadn’t gone downhill or obviously Warped Tour.
