REVIEW: Coast To Coast – The World Doesn’t Work EP

3

Summary

The World Doesn’t Work is a polished, mature and well-written EP that should take Coast To Coast to the next level of the UK Scene.

If you’ve been around the UK scene for the past few years then there’s a solid chance that you’ve either heard Coast To Coast’s name been bandied around or caught them on tour. They’re now releasing their third EP “The World Doesn’t Work” and are ready to take things to the next level.

Straight out of Birmingham, these guys have spent the past few years finding their footing and molding a sound that fits like a well-tailored suit. Their latest EP is the culmination of extensive touring, rounder songwriting and the evolution and maturing of the band musically.

Personally, I’d always found something just a bit lacking from Coast to Coast’s previous records, but “The World Doesn’t Work” seems to have found the missing piece of the puzzle and shows a level of maturity and potential that should put their name on the tip of people’s tongues going into 2019.
Although not straying too far from the path of a lot of pop punks evolution, the record echoes a similar sound to weightier UK bands like Lower Than Atlantis and Deaf Havana, with a track or two that harkens back to their original sound. This time, however, it’s a little slicker and far more accomplished, conveying a lot of the sentiment this EP clearly represents.

The record opens with “Tremble”, a melody-driven track that relies on its emotive lyric content to bring together the tone of the EP. Notable stand out track “The Sun Is Dim” was released as a single from the album and serves as a vehicle to highlight the depth Coast To Coast can deliver now they’ve found their feet. Although not lyrically incendiary, the combination of tempo and sound structure creates a wonderfully atmospheric track that is only measured by its sound technical ability. This is followed by “Be Kind”, a transition into a power pop punk track that shows the versatility of the band and reinforces that good tracks of this genre can still be written.

The World Doesn’t Work is a polished, mature and well-written EP that should take Coast To Coast to the next level of the UK Scene. This is a step in the right direction, following in the footsteps of bands that are learning to evolve within the genre and form their own identity. Each track is well crafted and elevated by the sound technical ability, the emotive and honest lyrics are the glue that brings it all together.

A great effort from the Birmingham Boys, 3 stars out of 5 and an exciting possibility for what comes next from them.

The record is released by Fox Records and can now be found on Spotify and Bandcamp
