REVIEW: Homebound – The Mould You Build Yourself Around

On February 10th Homebound release their new EP “The Mould You Build Yourself Around”. Having not heard of these guys before, I was pleasantly surprised by this EP. Its a pop punk staple.

The EP is a genuine, raw, great offering from a young UK band. You go through the 5 stages of a break up, with each of these tracks. A refreshing mature listen as you can tell these guys have definitely got a grasp on what they want and what they should sound like, and what direction their band will take. Charlie Boughton describes the EP; “It’s very much how it sounds. After any sort of relationship break up, depending on what side of it you are on, there’s always a period of turmoil in which you are battling with yourself and your tendency to overthink and replay scenarios in your head. I found writing the song to be somewhat therapeutic and an effective means in which to vent what I was feeling.” Thats what this album is you going through in five songs the stages of a break up; a universal thing we can all relate too. With its hard hitting lyrics, catchy riffs, I can see these guys gaining a lot of momentum this year. With an awesome support slot coming up with Four Year Strong on their upcoming Rise or Die Trying UK tour, I can see these tracks delivering live.

The EP opens with the catchy, anthemic Headspace, its a hard hitting opener, which is what you want from any album, I was genuinely impressed, as they had me hooked from track one. The album progresses into Pensive, the track is the moment in any break up where you’re questioning everything, feeling like you’re not really in the moment, because you’re so in your own head still. You can get from the third track, Boughton knows how to put into song form, exactly what he’s going through at every moment, he perfectly captures his thoughts. And the universal feelings we can all relate to, and thats what made this EP for me. My favourite track is the last track on the EP; Broken Reverie. It has such a good build up, and is what I want from a song at the end of an album. All in all I was impressed you can’t beat a good break up anthem and these guy’s have 5 to add to your break up playlist.

These guys are making me reminisce about a few UK bands that aren’t around anymore, and I think they’re what the UK needs right now. I’d recommend this EP, I’ve given it a few listens since my first stream, it just gets better. Hopefully theres a lot more to come from these guys this year.
